Freelance Invoice Template

Mono is for people who would happily send an invoice as plain text if accounts departments accepted it. Courier throughout, uppercase labels, three heavy black rules, and the amount owed set large at the bottom. No color, no filled boxes, no decoration standing between the client and the number.

Also available as a receipt and a quote — same design, different labels. No sign-up, no watermark, and everything is generated in your browser.

Most free invoice templates look like each other, and after a while they look like nobody in particular. If you write code or copy for a living, a bill that resembles a terminal says more about how you work than a pastel header does. The restraint is also practical: monospaced digits align by themselves, so the quantity, rate, and amount columns read straight down the page, and the total is the largest thing on the sheet because it is the thing the reader came for.

The fields are the ones a freelance bill actually needs. Line descriptions your client can recognize without emailing you — "API integration — 12 hours" beats "services rendered" — with hours as the quantity and your rate as the unit price, or a quantity of 1 for a fixed fee. Two dates, issued and due, so nobody does arithmetic from "Net 30". A notes block in the same 9-point Courier for payment instructions and the reference to quote. Discount, tax, and shipping lines appear only when they are nonzero; a bill with nothing to say about tax says nothing about it.

The same layout covers the whole exchange: a quote while you scope the work (the second date becomes "Valid until"), the invoice when you deliver, and a receipt once payment lands, which records how it was paid and totals as "Amount paid". Everything is generated in your browser — nothing you type is stored or sent anywhere, and there is no sign-up and no watermark. What Mono does not do: track your time, remember your clients, or number your invoices across sessions. The sequence is yours to keep.

Frequently asked questions

Why a monospaced font on an invoice?

Alignment and tone. Monospaced digits line up in columns without any table borders, which is most of what an invoice layout is for, and Courier is one of the standard PDF fonts, so the file stays small and renders identically everywhere it is opened.

Can I change the accent color?

No — black is the design. The heavy rules and the type are the whole composition, and a colored version would be a different template. If you want an accent, several of the other templates honor a custom one.

Does it work for quotes and receipts too?

Yes. The document type switches the labels that matter: a quote shows "Valid until" and "Quote total", a receipt shows "Paid on", the payment method, and "Amount paid" — so a receipt can never read as a demand for more money.

Can I add a logo, or is that ornament?

You can. It sits top-right above the first rule, sized to stay a logo rather than a banner, and it never leaves your device — the image is embedded into the PDF in your browser. Leaving it out is equally in character.
